More about STGCC 2011 – Media Release 7th Jun 2011

FAN FAVOURITES RETURN TO

THE 2011 SINGAPORE TOY, GAME & COMIC CONVENTION

Singapore, 7 June 2011 – The Singapore, Toy, Game & Comic Convention (STGCC) is proud to

announce the return of some of last year's fan favourites and a new show feature in the lead-up

to Singapore's largest popular culture celebration!

STGCC, which will take place on 20 & 21 August at the Suntec International Convention and

Exhibition Centre, is a popular culture convention showcasing the latest and greatest from the

fantastical worlds of toys, games and comics. Co-produced by Reed Exhibitions Singapore and

ReedPOP in the USA – the creators of the annual New York Comic Convention (NYCC) – STGCC shines a spotlight on what is hot and new from around the planet.

Return of Fan Favourites at STGCC 2011

The fourth edition of STGCC will include familiar faces and new names from Marvel Comics, DC

Comics and the Eastern pop culture space that fans will be eager to meet, and STGCC is proud to reveal that C.B. Cebulski and Simone Legno will be returning to Singapore.

Cebulski is Marvel Entertainment’s Senior Vice President of Creator and Content Development. He scouts for talent on an international level, travelling the world on the hunt for the best and brightest new artists. Cebulski appeared at last year's STGCC where he spoke on panels and conducted portfolio reviews with local artists aspiring to work for Marvel Comics.

Cebulski will be back this year to speak more on Marvel's heroes and its upcoming books – and spending more time to meet with local artists and review the portfolios of aspiring creators.

Italian toy designer Simone Legno, the creator of the very popular Tokidoki brand, will also be

back again at STGCC. The charismatic designer has been a staple highlight at STGCC since its first edition, launching exclusive collectibles at the event every year. Last year, Legno collaborated with SingPost to launch a limited edition Singapore stamp collection bearing his signature Japanese-style artwork, and Legno and Tokidoki are currently at work on a limited edition Tokidoki “Zip & Cody” figurine for the 2011 instalment of STGCC.

Ms Yeow Hui Leng, Project Director of STGCC, said: “We hear our fans and know how much they relish the chance to meet their favourite artists. The exclusive opportunity to meet famed artists, illustrators and toy designers not just from Asia, but also from the USA and Europe, right here in Singapore, is something at the heart of STGCC. We are honoured to welcome C.B. and Simone back, and we are excited to be announcing more guests soon!"

She adds: “Looking at this summer's blockbuster movie slate with films such as Thor, Green Lantern, X-Men: First Class, and Captain America hitting the big screen, we can expect more individuals to be inculcated into the world of pop culture. Let us not forget, these movies and their larger-than-life heroes were plucked from the pages of comic books published by Marvel Comics and DC Comics.”

Walk Through the History of the Superhero Movie

STGCC fans can also look forward to a special feature at this year's convention. A series of

superhero movie posters will go on display at the event, showcasing the birth and growth of the

superhero film genre through original movie posters from 1970s classics to today’s modern

movie epics.

Pop Corn Pop, a locally-based company specializing in original movie memorabilia, will be

presenting the gallery at STGCC, starting from a rare, original 1978 Superman print (worth $750

today) to the latest Captain America banners. Between them, attendees can get a glimpse of

other superhero blockbusters including 1989’s Batman and 2002’s Spider-Man.

Fans of Iron Man, Green Lantern and Captain America, which will hit Singapore screens in June

and July 2011 respectively, can also get their hands on the original print posters at the Pop Corn

Pop booth at STGCC. SingPost will also launch a limited edition “Marvel Comics & Spiderman

Ultimate 50 MyStamp Collection” – an exclusive stamp collection featuring Marvel superheroes

and Spiderman’s most unique 50 comic covers. SingPost will also be reproducing Spiderman’s

very first comic book issue for sale at STGCC.

The Complete Pop Culture Fan Experience

Ms Yeow Hui Leng said: “There is no other event in Southeast Asia that provides a more

inclusive experience into what is new and hot in the toy, game and comics worlds from both the

East and the West. We are proud to bring all these realms together at STGCC to create the

complete fan experience.”

Ticket sales will open in mid-June 2011. Ticket purchase will be available at

www.singaporetgcc.com. For more information about STGCC, visit www.singaporetgcc.com.

Lucky Star on Animax (StarHub TV Ch532)

Lucky Star will be on Animax (Starhub TV Ch532) starting 8th of June,  Mondays to Fridays at 7.30pm.

Synopsis

Based on the very real setting of Kasukabe city in Saitama Prefecture, Lucky Star follows the amusing antics and lively activities of four Japanese high school girls through their seemingly ordinary day-to-day lives in and out of school.

Meet Konata, an athletic and intelligent girl too dedicated to her favourite anime shows to excel in anything but being an anime otaku. There is Miyuki, the bespectacled living example of moe who has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of all subjects.

Also, Kagami is a ‘bitter-sweet’ character who is tough but shy to Konata's teases and pranks; and her younger fraternal twin sister, Tsukasa, a kind but air-headed simpleton.

Laughs abound through Lucky Star as the motley crew of teen girls find themselves in silly situations and hilarious misadventures more often than not. Anime fans will especially enjoy the series which is peppered with humorous references to the prevailing anime, manga and Japanese pop culture.

The popularity of the Lucky Star has brought more than 470,000 fans from across Japan over the 2011 New Year holidays to pay ‘pilgrimage’ to the Washinomiya Shrine. As Tokyo area's oldest shrine and real-life backdrop of the anime series, the shrine is where Kagami and Tsukasa work as miko (shrine maidens).  The influx of anime fans over the years has brought more than 1 billion yen to the town of Washimiya town where the shrine is situated.

AKB48 Singapore 28th 29th May 2011

Over the pass weekend, Singaporeans had experienced the second wave of AKB48 awesomeness.

A handshake event was held at *Scape level 5 gallery area on 28th May 2011 for fans that purchase merchanise of more than SGD$15.

I was unable to go as I got caught up by the fire incident at my block. From what I heard from the netizen the response is not bad, fans have sufficient time to talk to the 3 girls that represented the group at the handshake.

Of course, the girls visited our Singapore very own AKB OFFICIAL SHOP to get some goods too.

20110602-013802.jpg

The concert on the 29th May 2011 was a very special one. It was the first time that AKB members have a oversea theater birthday celebration.

For the new 19th year old, Hirajima Natsumi.

Many fans both 2 tickets for the 3pm and 7pm to experience the nest out of it. The official birthday celebration was at the 7pm show where everyone shouted Nacchan Nacchan Nacchan repeatedly for the encore. The audience all used green lightsticka for that segment as green was our birthday girl favorite colour!

The fans in Singapore are getting use to the mixes and had done fairly well to cheer on for the girls.

Fans will also given photograph purchase coupons to purchase photographs of the group photo taken after each show.

Both show ended with a handshake session which was a bonus!

The photos used in the posts are courtesy of AKS and AKB SINGAPORE.

AKB48 Singapore Press Conference and Shop Opening report

The press conference start out with Mr Shawn Chin, the Project Director of Singapore.

Mr Chin: “We are very honored and happy that Singapore have been chosen for the first overseas place to welcome AKB48 on a regular basis.”

A quick introduction video was played for the media that aren’t familiar with the group.

Mr Chin: “I think the key thing is that Singapore, we are really looking to bring the core idea: “Idols you can meet everyday”.

He also announced that there will be 2 concert days per month for the rest of 2011. There will be 16 members performing each time, there will be their sister groups; SKE48, NMB48 and SDN48.

The first concert for the Theater Singapore had received very good response, with online ticket sales being sold out in just half a day.

An artist impression was shown on the TV screen of how the AKB48 café, scheduled to open at *scape third storey in end of Jun 2011.

The welcome video of the members were shown to the media, and shortly after the arrival of the girls onto the stage.

Misaki  Iwasa introduced herself in English and a few lines in Japanese. “I’m very happy to be here today and get closer to the Singaporeans, and from now on we will have many concerts here in Singapore, we hope many of you know more about us.”

Komori Mika was next. “This is my second visit to Singapore, I would like to know more about Singapore, and I’ve decided to study English harder. Nice to meet you!”

Miho Miyazaki. “Lets have fun together! This is my first visit to Singapore, and from now on not only AKB48, you will see SKE, NMB as well as SDN. So please have fun together.”

A media Q and A session was held and as follows.

Q1. The single “Beginner” was number 1 on Oricon Chart last year, do you feel that you want to repeat this feat this year?

A1. Miho: Yes, of course. We have a stronghold that more and more people will know about us. So we have be releasing a lot of single ever since “Beginner” and we always try our best.

Q2.  There are many Japanese here, including expatriates (person living in a different country from where he or she is a citizen). What message do you have for them?

A2. Komori:  There might be some Japanese here in Singapore that they might not know us. So from now on, we would like all Japanese here also know us.

Miho added: We would like the Japanese people here to have fun with us.

Q3. Question for Miho: This is your first time in Singapore, two of your other group members have been here before.  What did they tell you about Singapore and what do you look forward to in Singapore?

A3. Miho:  Actually I did some research about Singapore, and the main thing was actually Merlion, but I heard that its difficult to see Merlion now. I’m looking forward to trying Singapore local food with the staff and friends here.

Q4. What are your thoughts of the Japan earthquake and did it affect you and family

A4. Komori:  My family are all fine, thank you very much for your concern.

Miho added: As AKB48, we started a project called Dareka no tame ni (
誰かのために)  which means what can I do for someone. We started a lot of projects to support the people that have been hit by this tragedy.

The press conference ended after a short photography session for media.

We were invited down to the AKB48 Singapore Official Shop of the Opening of the store.

Here are some photos I would like to share with everyone.
