My work horse~~~

C2D 8400/ 4GB RAM / HD4850

A major overhaul from the last few months. The casing have to be stripped bare and 120mm fans changed. The V8 cooler is a extra suprise though. I hope it will last. Photo processing time have been cut down to almost 1/4 of the usual time it take to chunk.

Quick Release Valves

It beens months I refitted the regulator assembly. There come another problem for dual airbrushes. There is only 1 airline. Using a splitter will have to do another refitted. I show this ebay seller which sold me my regulator have this quick release adaptor. God send. This is how it look like.

Tested no leakage from what I can see. Now I can change 0.2 Procon to 0.3 Sparmax with ease.

V8 Engine

I gotten a free Coolermaster V8 block from Ban Leong. Part of my lucky streak from Powercolor Xmas promotion. So I decided to give it a try and amazing it give a delta reading of 16 degree ranging. Of course mounting this hugh chunk of metal is a pain in the ass. The cool V8 engine design is kinda nice though and it almost never did clear my side cover panel

Photographic Upgrade Canon Eos 50D

ESO 50D, 85mm f1.8 attached, 580Ex II, 24-105L f4

After some struggle and a couple of bucks drop. I changed my body to the EOS 50D. Coming from the 450D, the experience from using 50D is hell lot of differences. First thing is the size of that beast with grip on. The grip is a lifeline, something I can’t do without. The body shell is rugged, suitable for chiong sua!!! The viewfinder is a godsend, big and bright. I can’t see crap on the 450D and hell it is small. The new LCD toasted me, it like a HDTV on the camera. Best of all is the AF microadjustment. I realigned both my lens, especially the 85mm with a -11 adjustment, it become pin sharp.

Although I pin the choice against the EOS 5D but the fps and the MA win me over to 50D instead. Let hope when is the next full frame other than the 5D MkII is coming out before this year end.

Glass of portraits – Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro

Having shot mutiple portraits shoot and the most recent TFCD shoot yesterday, I came to realise the 24-105L is nowhere deem for portraits. Although within the 85-110 portraits range, the f4 aperture make it a stop less "popping" lens than a f2.8 or less, but it make a great general photography lens. It will still be my event workhorse for times to come.

Come one day, my pro photographer friend decided to take a purge for Canon 24-70L and ditched his copy of Sigma 24-70. Enuff said, his result on the 24-70EX was stunning on par with Canon and serviced/calibrated. Above picture show the actual unit and 1/4 price of the Canon but the 82mm thread is a turn off. Decisions!!!!

50 f1.4 and 85 f1.8 are good prime for portraits but I don’t like to sneaker zoom. :D I am lazy. 70-200 f4 is a must get in the future but right now I have not encounter situation where I needed that tele range.

Westone UM-1

I finally got myself a portable audio rig. It been a long time since I bring out my mp3 players. I have always been using this rig at home but as can see it is way to bulky for the go. The UM-1 sound muffled for the moment, it will clear up after some burn-in.

Canon 580Ex II

After 2 months of reckoning. I finally got myself a Canon 580Ex II. I am still on a borrowed 18-55mm IS but a flash unit is there to stay and do wonders. Con, its heavy and my arm went numb after 10 mins of testing. NEED MORE ARM POWER TRAINING!! Why not 430Ex? Unlike lens, they come in varieties to pick from but 580Ex II is the highest end and save me cash when upgrading from 430Ex. Most important thing, more light is always better and I scrapped my plan for Canon 17-55mm (due to size and weight maybe) giving me more budget to blow it on flash.

DSLR some reconsideration

After some hard researching I have more or less decided on the Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD. It is a must have lens. Now then, some circumstances have forced me to reconsider my choice of a body. 450D and 40D. Some of the conditions I faced.

  1. Upgrade of equipment – Most or less I would not be upgrading to a advanced body higher than 40D
  2. Auto Focus – The cross type sensor is a major big plus
  3. Single Spending – I don’t want to get 450D and ended up losing resale value to upgrade to XXD. Get the best out there and deal with it.
  4. Price Differences – After some calculations I managed to come up with only $350 ++ differences in price between the 2 system.
  5. Cross body compatibility – Nuff said, batteries and accessories are easily available unlike 450D
  6. Battery – Last longer than 450D

One of the issue that bugs me is the weight of the 40D, other than that more or less 40D wins the race.

Need more brain juice I supposed. Free $600 from the government helps a lot and I wonder is my bonus going to come in this month, or not.

DSLR Final Verdict

Thanks to the people who commented. I roughly have some idea to make up my mind on which body to take. Next came the accessories + lens. Gotta pick one another.

Some of my lens choices

  • Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS f/3.5-5.6 (Kit lens)
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (I think this is a must have lens)
  • Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD (Alternative fast lens to the 18-55mm, cheap as well)
  • Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro (Part of the research)
  • Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC (More expensive than the Tamron)

ZOOM (Will have to see the need for zoom after hands on)

  • Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS (For the longer reach. The IS here is a saviour)

MACRO

  • Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro(The one and only for figu)

FLASH UNIT

  • Canon Ex Flash 420/430/550 Ex
  • Sigma EF-530 DG SUPER

Canon EOS 450D vs 40D?

The wait for getting a DSLR never came close. I been using my Fujifilm F31FD for quite some time, the though of getting a DSLR have came across my mind 1 year ago. It never effect due to the fact the pricing was too high. Things start to change when I heard Canon is going come out with a 400D predecessor, EOS 450D at a affordable price. It finally come 1 week ago but never got the chance to get it until Canon start slashing price as much as SGD$300. It makes the price gap significantly narrower. 40D never even cross my mind before this and now it aren’t just price factor that affect my decision.  SGD$1340 vs SGD$1750 Continue reading ‘Canon EOS 450D vs 40D?’
