AKB48 Singapore Press Conference and Shop Opening report

The press conference start out with Mr Shawn Chin, the Project Director of Singapore.

Mr Chin: “We are very honored and happy that Singapore have been chosen for the first overseas place to welcome AKB48 on a regular basis.”

A quick introduction video was played for the media that aren’t familiar with the group.

Mr Chin: “I think the key thing is that Singapore, we are really looking to bring the core idea: “Idols you can meet everyday”.

He also announced that there will be 2 concert days per month for the rest of 2011. There will be 16 members performing each time, there will be their sister groups; SKE48, NMB48 and SDN48.

The first concert for the Theater Singapore had received very good response, with online ticket sales being sold out in just half a day.

An artist impression was shown on the TV screen of how the AKB48 café, scheduled to open at *scape third storey in end of Jun 2011.

The welcome video of the members were shown to the media, and shortly after the arrival of the girls onto the stage.

Misaki  Iwasa introduced herself in English and a few lines in Japanese. “I’m very happy to be here today and get closer to the Singaporeans, and from now on we will have many concerts here in Singapore, we hope many of you know more about us.”

Komori Mika was next. “This is my second visit to Singapore, I would like to know more about Singapore, and I’ve decided to study English harder. Nice to meet you!”

Miho Miyazaki. “Lets have fun together! This is my first visit to Singapore, and from now on not only AKB48, you will see SKE, NMB as well as SDN. So please have fun together.”

A media Q and A session was held and as follows.

Q1. The single “Beginner” was number 1 on Oricon Chart last year, do you feel that you want to repeat this feat this year?

A1. Miho: Yes, of course. We have a stronghold that more and more people will know about us. So we have be releasing a lot of single ever since “Beginner” and we always try our best.

Q2.  There are many Japanese here, including expatriates (person living in a different country from where he or she is a citizen). What message do you have for them?

A2. Komori:  There might be some Japanese here in Singapore that they might not know us. So from now on, we would like all Japanese here also know us.

Miho added: We would like the Japanese people here to have fun with us.

Q3. Question for Miho: This is your first time in Singapore, two of your other group members have been here before.  What did they tell you about Singapore and what do you look forward to in Singapore?

A3. Miho:  Actually I did some research about Singapore, and the main thing was actually Merlion, but I heard that its difficult to see Merlion now. I’m looking forward to trying Singapore local food with the staff and friends here.

Q4. What are your thoughts of the Japan earthquake and did it affect you and family

A4. Komori:  My family are all fine, thank you very much for your concern.

Miho added: As AKB48, we started a project called Dareka no tame ni (
誰かのために)  which means what can I do for someone. We started a lot of projects to support the people that have been hit by this tragedy.

The press conference ended after a short photography session for media.

We were invited down to the AKB48 Singapore Official Shop of the Opening of the store.

Here are some photos I would like to share with everyone.

Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention 2011 Media Release

Opens Earlier in August to Meet Fans’ Demand

Singapore, 4 May 2011 – By popular demand, the Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention (STGCC), a popular culture convention, will be back four months earlier this year. Into its fourth year, the annual pop culture event will take place on 20 and 21 August 2011 at the Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The event is a showcase of the latest and greatest in the toy, games, comics scenes, and the top-notch quality and variety it offers in these sectors have attracted legions of fans locally in Singapore and across the region.

Last December, the show drew more than 28,000 fans and a total visitorship of 72,000, and the online community is already abuzz with excitement and looking forward to the show being staged earlier this year.

An Earlier Date for STGCC 2011

Ms. Yeow Hui Leng, Project Director of Reed Exhibitions Singapore, which organises the yearly show, said: “Bringing the convention to August this year was a decision made after gathering feedback from fans, industry professionals, and exhibitors. The new dates do not overlap with fans’ holiday plans and the peak travel season, making it easier for all pop culture buffs to attend the event and cheaper for overseas fans to travel to Singapore.

“We have also consolidated the show into a two-day format to make the programme more compact, and fans will be able to catch all the action happening over the weekend.”

Ms. Yeow added that the earlier dates also provide benefits to exhibitors, retailers and fans. “August coincides with the period when companies launch new products, and we are looking forward to seeing more exhibitors join us at STGCC this year — promoting and premiering the must-have items for all toy, games and comics fans. We are also in talks to unveil limited-edition collectibles and STGCC exclusives with exhibitors who have already signed up for the 2011 show.”

Same Scale with a Topical Focus

STGCC is co-produced by Reed Exhibitions Singapore and ReedPOP in the USA. ReedPOP is the team behind international events including the New York Comic Con (NYCC), New York Anime Festival and Star Wars Celebration.

Reed, which took over STGCC in 2010, upped the ante when Marvel Comics and its entourage of writers and illustrators such as C.B. Cebulski, Salvador Larroca and Matt Fraction made their inaugural appearances in Asia at STGCC last December.

This year, STGCC promises to delight, tantalize and inspire fans with up-close-and-personal opportunities with heavyweights and cult names in the toy, games and comics scenes. Ms. Yeow said: “We look forward to continue giving fans thrilling opportunities to meet and interact one-on-one with well-known comic creators, illustrators and toy designers.”

NYCC Veteran to Further Boost Programming for STGCC 2011

For this fourth edition of STGCC, Reed Exhibitions Singapore will again be working closely with ReedPOP to create a robust programme dedicated to Asian fans. NYCC veteran Mr. Peter Tatara, Director of Industry Development from ReedPOP, will be based in Singapore during the planning phase to construct a more focused programme with a healthy distribution of toy, games, comics content from both East and West.

Mr. Lance Fensterman, ReedPOP Group Vice President and NYCC Show Manager, said: “One of STGCC’s unique points is its merging of top quality content from the East and West into one nexus in Southeast Asia. We want to build on our successes to give fans a complete pop culture experience, with the bigger goal of developing STGCC into the leading catalyst for pop culture in Asia. With the support of our fans, industry professionals, and exhibitors, we aim to grow STGCC into Asia’s biggest pop culture show, equivalent in both size and scope to its sister events like NYCC.”

Discovering New Talent in Asia

In addition to entertaining fans in Singapore and Asia, STGCC will also continue its role as a talent-spotting platform in Southeast Asia via Artist Alley. Artist Alley is a special segment at STGCC which gives aspiring artists an international platform to showcase their creative talent and artwork. Not just home to pop culture super stars, Artist Alley at last year’s STGCC saw the participation of over 40 talented rising artists from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

This year's STGCC takes place 20 and 21 August 2011 at the Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Singapore. Ticket sales will open by July 2011. For more information about STGCC, visit www.singaporetgcc.com.

STGCC Day 1

The year is coming to an end soon, and with the New Year less than a few hours away, I have to clear my posts.

Pardon me for my outdated post, as I was dragging myself to work with my ill body for the past weeks.

Singapore Toys, Games, and Comics Convention was held over 10th – 12th Dec this year.  This year planning was very thoughtful and the lineup was great.

Let me start with Day 1 – 10th Dec 2010.

I reached the venue early and got to walk around the halls before the crowds from level 3 enters and got to see some of the behind the scenes preparation and rehearsals. Media kit provided for the medias are very helpful and informative, it comes with the time table of the happenings, catalog of the exclusive releases and collectibles, opening media release, fact sheets, and  introduction of conference and panels and it also came along with a media kit CD medium, with PDF, reference  pictures and photos.

During the media preview, the director of the convention gave the opening speech and with him are some guest invited to the event; Alex Maleev, Esad Ribic, C.B. Cebulski, Tim Tsui, Matt Fraction, Gail Simone, and Leinil Yu.

A short QnA were held before the doors were opened.

Here are some of the extracts.

Media : What's the greatest challenge in your profession?

C.B. Cebulski: As talent scout for Marvel Comics, I travel around the world and meet so many talented artists, and  the biggest challenge that I find is actually getting the artist into the system because there are so much good,  artistic, creative talent out there, that finding a home for all of them is impossible.

Matt Fraction: American comics come out every 30 days, whether or not you are in the mood to write it, it has to come out. We have to work consisently and not even a day off.

Gail Simone: This is as Matt said, something that has to come out on time, consisently, all the time. And as  scriptwriters, we have to get the work done on time, so the artist have the time to do their best work. If we were late, it really has a terrible ripple effect. But I don't find it a challenge to be one of the female up here,  alot of people asked me this question. I enjoyed my work and to me I don't really think about a female writing comic until other people bring it up to me.

Tim Tsui: To be on schedule, because we always need to fly here fly there and we need to prepare everything for the worst.

Media : How has social media and new digital technologies impacted the comics industry?

Gail Simone: I'm pretty excited about it actually. One of the issues we have been dealing with comics is how to bring readers in, readers maybe have a hard time getting the actual books. And with DC we are doing alot of digital comics right now and we are seeing to reach a much wider audience, much more worldwide, which is another reason I'm very excited about this particular convention because western comics are no longer just in America, we also have online content that is available only online. I think its all for the good that the business is growing in getting more and more diversity, more different types of content.

C.B. Cebulski: From the fan point-of-view, its easy for the creators to communicate with the fans, and get the message out there using social media like Facebook and Twitter, and it brings the comics community close together. Back in the days we used of have just the last issue box, fan letters at the back with comics, thats the form of communication with the publishers, but now we have instant access, in the international level it had brought the world more closer together. Gail and I have been tweeting here in Singapore the response is fantastic. From the business point-of-view for me, from a talent scout point-of-view is that it makes my job mush easier because I'm able to get instant access to artists around the world through Facebook and Twitter and its easier for them to find me and me to find them. And the last aspect is from the publishing point-of-view, which is still an uncharted territory because we have so many mediums out there, that there is no set kind of platform. From the publishing pov we are still learning and growing, and publishers are all working with the distributors trying to find a "happy medium" for everyone that both can exist; printed comics and digital mediums. The comics business will keep growing and need to learn to adapt with it.

I would like to comment on the way this convention was organised, the organizers plan for space to queue, example the entry queue at level 3 before the crowd can enter the halls, the AKB48 queue for the handshake at the stage, the walk of fame where the fans get to meet their favorite artists to get them to draw and sign for them.
