STGCC Day 2

Saturday plus school holidays, it’s a divine combo for events.

The second day starts at 11am, and crowd was scary!

Stroll along the artist alley and stayed at the walk of fame for a while to see the artist do their job, as fans goes up to them to collect their autograph and illustrations.

Attended the panel by Lucasfilm ; Iron Man 2: An insider's treat on the movie's visual effects, which was very interesting.

The queue for AKB48 Meet-the-fans session already started unofficially outside the Suntec Level 3 Theater.  The unofficial queue was eventually moved to the empty space further away from the entrance to accommodate to more fans that were queuing.

STGCC Day 1

The year is coming to an end soon, and with the New Year less than a few hours away, I have to clear my posts.

Pardon me for my outdated post, as I was dragging myself to work with my ill body for the past weeks.

Singapore Toys, Games, and Comics Convention was held over 10th – 12th Dec this year.  This year planning was very thoughtful and the lineup was great.

Let me start with Day 1 – 10th Dec 2010.

I reached the venue early and got to walk around the halls before the crowds from level 3 enters and got to see some of the behind the scenes preparation and rehearsals. Media kit provided for the medias are very helpful and informative, it comes with the time table of the happenings, catalog of the exclusive releases and collectibles, opening media release, fact sheets, and  introduction of conference and panels and it also came along with a media kit CD medium, with PDF, reference  pictures and photos.

During the media preview, the director of the convention gave the opening speech and with him are some guest invited to the event; Alex Maleev, Esad Ribic, C.B. Cebulski, Tim Tsui, Matt Fraction, Gail Simone, and Leinil Yu.

A short QnA were held before the doors were opened.

Here are some of the extracts.

Media : What's the greatest challenge in your profession?

C.B. Cebulski: As talent scout for Marvel Comics, I travel around the world and meet so many talented artists, and  the biggest challenge that I find is actually getting the artist into the system because there are so much good,  artistic, creative talent out there, that finding a home for all of them is impossible.

Matt Fraction: American comics come out every 30 days, whether or not you are in the mood to write it, it has to come out. We have to work consisently and not even a day off.

Gail Simone: This is as Matt said, something that has to come out on time, consisently, all the time. And as  scriptwriters, we have to get the work done on time, so the artist have the time to do their best work. If we were late, it really has a terrible ripple effect. But I don't find it a challenge to be one of the female up here,  alot of people asked me this question. I enjoyed my work and to me I don't really think about a female writing comic until other people bring it up to me.

Tim Tsui: To be on schedule, because we always need to fly here fly there and we need to prepare everything for the worst.

Media : How has social media and new digital technologies impacted the comics industry?

Gail Simone: I'm pretty excited about it actually. One of the issues we have been dealing with comics is how to bring readers in, readers maybe have a hard time getting the actual books. And with DC we are doing alot of digital comics right now and we are seeing to reach a much wider audience, much more worldwide, which is another reason I'm very excited about this particular convention because western comics are no longer just in America, we also have online content that is available only online. I think its all for the good that the business is growing in getting more and more diversity, more different types of content.

C.B. Cebulski: From the fan point-of-view, its easy for the creators to communicate with the fans, and get the message out there using social media like Facebook and Twitter, and it brings the comics community close together. Back in the days we used of have just the last issue box, fan letters at the back with comics, thats the form of communication with the publishers, but now we have instant access, in the international level it had brought the world more closer together. Gail and I have been tweeting here in Singapore the response is fantastic. From the business point-of-view for me, from a talent scout point-of-view is that it makes my job mush easier because I'm able to get instant access to artists around the world through Facebook and Twitter and its easier for them to find me and me to find them. And the last aspect is from the publishing point-of-view, which is still an uncharted territory because we have so many mediums out there, that there is no set kind of platform. From the publishing pov we are still learning and growing, and publishers are all working with the distributors trying to find a "happy medium" for everyone that both can exist; printed comics and digital mediums. The comics business will keep growing and need to learn to adapt with it.

I would like to comment on the way this convention was organised, the organizers plan for space to queue, example the entry queue at level 3 before the crowd can enter the halls, the AKB48 queue for the handshake at the stage, the walk of fame where the fans get to meet their favorite artists to get them to draw and sign for them.

探偵オペラ ミルキィホームズ at Anime Festival Asia X

Mr Takaaki Kidani, President of Bushiroad made an appearance on 13th November 2010 at Anime Festival Asia X, bringing along the seiyuu unit from the anime探偵オペラ ミルキィホームズ Tantei Opera Milky Holmes.

We are lucky to have them perform for us two sets. First is the anime opening Seikai wa Hitotsu! Ja nai!! , and the PSP opening theme; Ame Agari no mirai.

Guess I’m the only media that recorded the videos from within the barricade, thanks to the permission from Mr Shawn Chin the AFA Director.

Gonna make this a MILKY HOLMES exclusive post. XD

Plus some photos:

The seiyuus were invited to have a autograph session for the fans at Bushiroad that bought items their Weiβ Schwarz (WS) expansion. And the winners of the match are invited to have a game with the seiyuus to get additional signs. Good deal eh?

Below is a photo that I found one of my friends tagged in. All four seiyuus sign XD.

AFA X Day 2 – Short series

Everything has a start and an end.

The day started with the screening of The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi the Movie.

The queue for the festival hall was more organized this time, as most of the AFA X goers already got their tickets and partly because of the movie screening at the stage hall.

The queue for otakus to get their merchandise was still quite long.

Sunday morning, 10am at the AKIBA MINI stage, we are honored to welcome on stage Aira from Japan.  Aira cosplayed Black Rock Shooter with katana, fans are able to take photo with her.

The reason why I wrote “short series” was because of the queue that I was about to camp for.

angela fans got their posters freshly signed and presented to them.

Business is looking good at the Moe Moe Kyun maid café too!

I zoomed myself to the AKIBA mini stage area once I heard that SCANDAL is there as the Anisong Karaoke judges.

As usual due to space constrain, media aren’t allowed in to cover the portion.  Snapped a few photos and back to Show Management Office area to begin my camping.

Once again I started the SCANDAL queue! For 3 hours I waited, to be the 1st to be able to shake SCANDAL’s hands and get the poster. It was all worth-it!

This is a confession, due to my crazy fandom over SCANDAL, I wasn’t able to cover the REGIONAL COSPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS XD. My apologies, but idols are serious business too! There’s a quote I saw my friend posted on twitter, “There is no joke when it comes to idols”. Inspiring?

Thanks for reading my reports of AFA X. I can’t wait for the next Anime Festival Asia already! Can’t imagine what lineup they’ve installed for us!

See you next year!

the rest of the photos spams:

AFA X Day 1 – It’s all about the stage and stars

The crowd had gathered around the AKIBA MINI stage around 10am on Saturday morning. The moment I heard girls screaming, I knew it was time for me to do some work.

Up on stage was KANAME and his translator, fans were given the opportunity to go up the stage and ask their celebrity cosplayer questions on cosplay.

In the other hall, the movie screening of Mardock Scramble had just ended, it was soon followed by a talk by Mr Go Nakanishi; Animation Producer of King Records.

I don’t even recall if I had lunch on that day or not?!

Next I left for the Show Management office to meet my friends that are collecting their pre-signed autographed poster from May’n. When she came out of the door to the booth, she waved and smiled at me as I was standing at the 1st row of the audience; I was surprised that she still remembers me.

I started the queue for JAM PROJECT autograph and was the 1st to shake JAM PROJECT hands and collect the poster!

Lunch or not, the next lineup follows, the Cosplay Meet and Greet with Alodia Gosiengfiao, a cosplayer from the Philippines, and a common face on the Animax channel. Fans are able to take a photo with her in her Haruhi Gothic Lolita costume.

There’s never enough time and I wished I could have splitting abilities, on the Stage hall, was a special appearance by MILKY HOLMES seiyuu team which I will cover on a separate post.

After the MILKY HOLMES, was the ANIKI autograph collection, again I was lucky enough as my friend let me collect the poster in his place.  Off to Show Management Office I go.  The queue for ANIKI was epic long and I was the last few to get the poster and handshake with him.

By the time ANIKI finish issuing the posters, Kana Hanazawa the seiyuu for many well known animes and the recent hit, KUROI MATO from Black Rock Shooter, was already on stage. She did a live dubbing of the scene where she brought Yomi to the place she likes to view sunset and presents Yomi the star strap.

And that was the last event of the day. Other then the I LOVE ANISONG concert.

Stay tuned for the MILKY HOLMES post.

AFA X Day 1 – Adventures in the Festival Hall 401

As early as 7am on the 13th of November 2010, queue for the AFA X tickets already started. It’s a tradition from the previous AFAs that people will start queuing very early, whats more scary this time is the queue to enter the Festival hall after getting the tickets. All the otakus camped outside the hall and waited to get themselves into the FESTIVAL HALL where they can get all their limited exclusives items booths got for AFA X.

Medias and I only managed to get our media passes around 0830hours. So the time for us to recce and take photos before the battalion of otakus rushes in to wipe all the merchandises.

Good Smile Company had also join in the fun, bringing us exclusives from the Black Rock Shooter such as handphone straps, folders and tee shirts.

Its photo spam time!

this one is for Kippei XD
