The wait for getting a DSLR never came close. I been using my Fujifilm F31FD for quite some time, the though of getting a DSLR have came across my mind 1 year ago. It never effect due to the fact the pricing was too high. Things start to change when I heard Canon is going come out with a 400D predecessor, EOS 450D at a affordable price. It finally come 1 week ago but never got the chance to get it until Canon start slashing price as much as SGD$300. It makes the price gap significantly narrower. 40D never even cross my mind before this and now it aren’t just price factor that affect my decision. SGD$1340 vs SGD$1750

Some of the feature that I look forward to is the 0.95x viewfinder, the 3200 ISO and the 40D autofocus system. The weight and dimension is a lot bigger than 450D which might be a problem for me. 40D will have the niffy control dial for easy camera handling. One more thing, the accessories are shared over a few system whereas 450D used a totally new system.
Headache!

I say go with the cheaper and spend the money to buy good lens and good flash, the camera won’t make much difference, but the lens and the flash will make huge difference.
example of using stock flash and addon flash: http://tinyurl.com/6e5wzl (taken using nikon d40, sigma 150mm macro, handheld)
ron~’s last blog post..Spring 2008 Anime Preview with PV
Woah upgrade ah … not an expert in camera so I can’t comment on this. But I think what ron said does make sense.
Less cash for plastic :3
ron is absolutely right! The lens and the flash is very important. My mom bought a Canon EOS 650 20 years ago and spent a lot of money for a brilliant lens and a good flash and they work still fine. 7 years ago I bought a Canon EOS 3000N with stock flash for my sister and… it’s not as good as my mother’s one. Both are analog.
All in all: Buy the cheaper one and spend some money on the equipment!
I say go with the cheaper body and put the extra money into a lens.
Here in Thailand the 450D with the 18-55 IS lens kit is THB 27.900
The EOS 40D body only is THB 36.900
You didn’t say in your post if the prices in SG$ are for body or kits. It would be interesting to compare between different countries.
I’m a newspaper photo-journalist. I was going to buy the 40D but now I’ll get the 450D. Despite what Canon say neither are good in the rain and I’ll feel less sad about a 450D getting wet than than a 40D.
And the extra 2 million pixel capability is good too. It would have been nice if Canon had included the sRaw capability on the 450D.
Anyway, technology wise it will be out of date in a year. Certainly in five years. And as far as the other poster goes, who cares what the body is made out of? Plastic, aluminium. Used to be brass a long time ago and those bodies still let dust and water in. Just made the bodies heavier and more expensive to repair.
Not interested in snobbery or bragging. Just taking photo’s.
Good luck.
