Canon EOS 450D vs 40D?

The wait for getting a DSLR never came close. I been using my Fujifilm F31FD for quite some time, the though of getting a DSLR have came across my mind 1 year ago. It never effect due to the fact the pricing was too high. Things start to change when I heard Canon is going come out with a 400D predecessor, EOS 450D at a affordable price. It finally come 1 week ago but never got the chance to get it until Canon start slashing price as much as SGD$300. It makes the price gap significantly narrower. 40D never even cross my mind before this and now it aren’t just price factor that affect my decision.  SGD$1340 vs SGD$1750

Some of the feature that I look forward to is the 0.95x viewfinder, the 3200 ISO and the 40D autofocus system. The weight and dimension is a lot bigger than 450D which might be a problem for me. 40D will have the niffy control dial for easy camera handling. One more thing, the accessories are shared over a few system whereas 450D used a totally new system.

Headache!

  • I say go with the cheaper and spend the money to buy good lens and good flash, the camera won’t make much difference, but the lens and the flash will make huge difference.

example of using stock flash and addon flash: http://tinyurl.com/6e5wzl (taken using nikon d40, sigma 150mm macro, handheld)

  • Woah upgrade ah … not an expert in camera so I can’t comment on this. But I think what ron said does make sense.

  • Less cash for plastic :3

  • ron is absolutely right! The lens and the flash is very important. My mom bought a Canon EOS 650 20 years ago and spent a lot of money for a brilliant lens and a good flash and they work still fine. 7 years ago I bought a Canon EOS 3000N with stock flash for my sister and… it’s not as good as my mother’s one. Both are analog.

All in all: Buy the cheaper one and spend some money on the equipment!

  • I say go with the cheaper body and put the extra money into a lens.

Here in Thailand the 450D with the 18-55 IS lens kit is THB 27.900
The EOS 40D body only is THB 36.900

You didn’t say in your post if the prices in SG$ are for body or kits. It would be interesting to compare between different countries.

I’m a newspaper photo-journalist. I was going to buy the 40D but now I’ll get the 450D. Despite what Canon say neither are good in the rain and I’ll feel less sad about a 450D getting wet than than a 40D.

And the extra 2 million pixel capability is good too. It would have been nice if Canon had included the sRaw capability on the 450D.

Anyway, technology wise it will be out of date in a year. Certainly in five years. And as far as the other poster goes, who cares what the body is made out of? Plastic, aluminium. Used to be brass a long time ago and those bodies still let dust and water in. Just made the bodies heavier and more expensive to repair.

Not interested in snobbery or bragging. Just taking photo’s.

    Good luck.

  • Good point John!

  • I can see and appreciate that getting a lense is much more important, having heard from other dslr users, lenses really help with the quality where as you won’t see a lot of difference between the two bodies. Also, saves you some money, although there isn’t really a lot between them price wise here in the UK.

  • Well, I don’t quite agree with the “go for the cheaper body since it doesn’t really make a difference” argument in this case. The 40D is a semi-professional camera that beats the 450 in almost every possible aspect. Id say its only flaws are the use of Compact Flash instead of SD and, if you care, the 10MP against the 12 that features the 450. If you are hesitating between these two, I’d advice you to spend some extra on the 40D, you’ll get greatly rewarded with its performance.
BTW, now that I notice the date of your post, which did u choose?

  • I’m just a beginner who recently picked up a 450D and absolutely love it. But the 50D, a very nice camera indeed.

  • look the small LCD besides the hot shoe, one in left side and one in right side, in fact, the canon 450D havn’t a small LCD to display information, that express, the 450 is much low level than eos 40D in this areas

  • I was with the same dillema, and went for the 40d. Then , i realized that it was a little too big for me to carry around, and too many features, since i´m new to DSLR’s.. I´m thinking to seel the 40d to buy the 450d, but the higher ISO and shutter speed keeps me from selling it, although i didn´t used them yet..

  • I since convert to 50D. Anyone who plan and have the extra dough. Go with the xxD

  • so…450D or 40D ??

  • Im so torn between the 450D n 40D. The reviews are more favourable towards 40D. But I really love the 450D a lot..

    Dilemma.. Any can help/?..

  • Get the 40D… as of now I am on the 50D

  • I’ve got the 450D and wish I had the extra LCD on the top of the camera like on the XXD models. That’s my only complaint about it.

  • Between me and my friend we’ve had more slr cameras over the months than I can remember, including many different Samsungs, Sonys, Canons and many more models. But, the last few weeks I’ve settled down to one line of digital cameras. Why? Because I was happy to take take notice of how well-designed and thrilling the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Canon EOS Rebel T2 actually is. With it I have been able to take the most fantastic pictures. That’s all I wanted to tell, hope you have a wonderful day and make sure to take some stunning photos!
