Knowledge of paints and coats

Today I am going to discuss paints. Paint are the basis of the outcome of the resin.

Paint are generalised into 3 categories: (water-based) acrylic, enamels and lacquer. Acrylic brands includes Tamiya and Mr Hobby. Enamels includes Humbrol and Testors. Lacquer are most commonly used because they are thinner based and the end result is often must better than water acrylics.I have no experience with enamels except they are great for handbrushing, they dry slow therefore have the self leveling effect. Other type of paint which I come across are 2K paint which are automotive paints. But today I will talk about 2K paint, the rest of the paint infomation can be found here.

Being taught under Xenomorph, which I take my hats off for them. As it seem, their paints are 2K type. Ah Ben will always say "Why do I use it?! Of course it must be the best, thats why I use it." Why use 2k then? Have you ever wonder but car paint job look so good which make them shift the logic to resin kits.

Which lead us to what are they called "2K". A search on google reveals " 2K means 2 components are mixed together i.e. paint and hardener, then either air dried or baked." Which unlike normal hobby paints, the solvent evaporate leaving the colour pigment behind. 2K paints requires a hardener to cure the paint which is another reason why it is scratch resistant and a lot tougher. A few colours look better with 2K than with hobby paint. Some examples are silver and white. Last thing to note, it is a lot cheaper but the range of colours is limited.

Another thing I want to talk about is matt coat and top coat. I have never ever used hobby clear or gloss. What I used was for matt is artists varnish, for gloss is polyurethane clear meaning car gloss. Thats how shiny will the gloss coat be. I was unable to capture the glossy looking bunny suit because of the crap camera I have.

The above are for spraybrushing, what else? HANDBRUSHING with a brush. Handbrushing is a pain in the ass. The two paint type suitable for handbrushing is enamel and citadel. Acrylics run too much for hand painting. Citadel are the best for handbrushing. In case of no one knows what is citadel paint, they are by gamesworkshop for their warhammer minitures. I have tried it today, they are real smooth flowing and real expansive.
